Name of the institution’s featured sustainability program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Environmental Resilience Institute

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

Launched in 2017, the Environmental Resilience Institute is part of Prepared for Environmental Change, the second initiative developed and funded through Indiana University's Grand Challenges Program.

IU's $50 million investment in the initiative supports ERI’s efforts to better predict the impact of environmental change and to facilitate collaboration between IU's world-class faculty and Indiana residents, businesses, and nonprofits.

Heavier spring flooding. Hotter, drier summers. Shifting growing seasons. These are just a few of the consequences of a warming climate.

This century, Indiana and the world will experience unparalleled environmental change that will threaten public health, species diversity, natural systems, and Hoosier communities.

Working with partners throughout the state, the Environmental Resilience Institute is fostering Indiana’s ability to withstand the wide-ranging impacts of climate change, including changes that affect the state’s economy and health.

With ERI's support, researchers from across Indiana University are:

Generating accurate projections of coming risks related to climate, water, ecosystems, and disease.
Developing innovative strategies for conserving wildlife and natural resources and for designing greener, more disaster-resilient communities.
Finding new ways to measure public perception of risk and to communicate implications of environmental change.
Advising government and business leaders on how to make decisions that affect agriculture, industry, infrastructure, and public health.

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
Center for Rural Engagement & Sustaining Hoosier Communities

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

"Engaging communities through research, teaching, service, and partnership"

We reimagine the relationship between universities and rural communities.

Our center calls on the research, expertise, teaching, and service of IU Bloomington faculty, staff, and students to address the challenges Indiana communities face and to enhance opportunities in collaboration with communities.

A key program of CRE is Sustaining Hoosier Communities, modeled after the national Sustainable Cities program. Cities partner with IU courses to solve city-defined sustainability, justice, and access challenges. Community leaders can build new relationships with Indiana University faculty, students, and staff, while collaborating on projects important to you and your neighbors. Projects can address a range of economic, environmental, and social sustainability opportunities, and project leaders come from all walks of life—from residents to elected officials.

Sustaining Hoosier Communities is based on the community engagement model championed by the Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Community Network (EPIC-N), which universities across the nation have adopted.
