Indiana University Bloomington is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

IU Bloomington collaborates with peer institutions as a member of Big 10 and Friends Environmental Stewardship Council, Big 10 Sustainability Directors, and Indiana Green Campus Network organizations. IU also coordinates a network of sustainability stakeholders from the nine Indiana University system campuses across the state with annual IU Statewide Sustainability Summit events and monthly conference calls. The Indiana Sustainability Development Program is also expanding a network between IU campuses and organizations/municipalities throughout Indiana as the program connects IU students to summer sustainability focused externship roles statewide.

At the 2019 AASHE conference in Spokane, Indiana University system attendee figures reached the mid-20s including 5 sustainability office staff, 2 academics/residential programs staff, and 4 students from the Bloomington (IUB) campus. Faculty, staff, and students from 4 other IU campuses (IUPUI, IUSB, IUE, IUSE) made up an impressive total IU presence this year spanning:

Locally, Bloomington Director of Sustainability Andrew Predmore has served on the Bloomington Sustainability Commission and Bloomington Assistant Director of Sustainability Makayla Bonney has served on the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District Citizen Action Committee.

Members of IU are also engaged with the Indiana Recycling Coalition and Indiana Chapter of USGBC.

A brief description of the mentoring relationship and activities:

IU Bloomington has assisted other in-state colleagues with their sustainability initiatives (such as Depauw University, Indiana State University, Butler University, Franklin College, University of Southern Indiana) in the role of peer mentor, free consultant, and/or providing speakers over the years. IUB regularly collaborates with other institutions in our local and regional networks and is active in a leadership role among the 9 IU campuses statewide through monthly calls and organizing/co-hosting summits. Beyond the state, IU has provided feedback and resources to institutions (such as Bennington College on their sustainability tracking process) and communications with fellow Big 10 universities and others nationwide takes place frequently through AASHE resources/platforms. Former IU sustainability interns and ISDP program externs have also taken on a variety of higher ed roles (including Oberlin College, Butler University, Utah State, and Penn State) and these relations provide ongoing connections/communications.

A brief description of other inter-campus collaborative efforts around sustainability during the previous year :

IU Bloomington has assisted with the Big Ten and Friends development of metrics and strategic planning and we are piloting Common Ground initiatives in collaboration with other Common Ground institutions. IU Bloomington is also a charter member of the Higher Education Cleantech Consortium.

IU Sustainability staff attended a Midwest Higher Education Consortium workshop on aggregate renewable purchasing for universities in the midwest.

Director of RPS Dining Rahul Shrivastav maintains a collaborative relationship with the dining managers of Big 10 institutions and this group shares best practices on the Real Food Challenge and sustainable dining.
