A Green Team is an informal group of faculty and staff in a particular campus unit who work collectively to promote environmentally, socially, and economically friendly practices within that unit. Getting involved with a Green Team is a great way for members of the Indiana University community to reduce the environmental impacts of their office while also helping Indiana University become a more sustainable institution!
A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:
Members self-select by joining their department's Green Team.
A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
To be as effective as possible, Office of Sustainability staff meet with all potential Green Team Leaders prior to the formation of a team to assess opportunities and challenges unique to the team’s building and department, and to provide leaders with an overview of how the Green Team program works. They will also suggest a preliminary Green Team meeting with other departmental staff in order to convey the benefits and reasons for joining a Green Team. Office of Sustainability staff are also happy to attend Green Team meetings, as requested, or to meet with new or potential new members of existing teams.
Green Teams may also submit information for certification (Seed, Sprout, Sapling, and Tree certification levels) and consult with Office of Sustainability staff about certification and possible next steps for their teams. A number of outreach and educational initiatives toward other members of the department are a requirement of certification.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):
A paid intern coordinator and various social events to network between teams, share resources, and provide support for teams. Teams may also apply for funding from the Student Sustainability Council's project fund and the Office of Sustainability's Innovation Fund.
