The IU Office of Sustainability and its Environmental Quality and Land Use Working Group collaborated with Landscape Services to develop a GIS phone app to inventory more than 12,000 trees on campus. This effort was led by student sustainability intern, Will Drews, mentored by IUOS Associate Director, Dr. Andrew Predmore, and Landscape Services Manager, Mike Girvin. Will developed training so student volunteers could assist Landscape Services with the inventory. The inventory was completed with minimal cost after a commercial vendor quoted $400,000 to do the work. In addition, the inventory database is owned by IU and can be easily updated by Landscape Services staff who are now equipped with iPads to make changes to the inventory in the field as they service trees.
