A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
Sustainability concepts are incorporated into the orientation most prominently though an alternative transportation overview. The following information is provided to all students, incorporating all three tiers of sustainability: How to use the campus bus system and city bus system -How “Double Map” bus tracking app. works and how the students can use it to travel campus without having to use a car. -All students can ride campus and city buses for free. Student id's are needed for the city bus but not campus bus. Active Transportation, including bikes -How to register your bike and why it is important -Maps of bike paths on campus, brief description of how to navigate roads as a cyclist -Where to find bike racks and how to properly lock your bicycle Commuting options -Description of airport shuttle and Chicago-land shuttle. Students are told that it's a good option to avoid bringing a car to campus. -ZipCar: Students can avoid brining a car to campus and reserve a ZipCar only when they need it. Students are briefly presented research that shows that people drive less when they don't have a car readily available. Zimride: Students are taught how and why they should use this cloud based software to carpool on trips home, weekend excursions, and vacations in order to avoid green house gas emissions as well as airborne pollutants, save money, and reducing fuel consumption. Additionally, although not a formal component of new student orientation, the annual Hoosier to Hoosier Resale takes place during Welcome Week. Hoosier to Hoosier (H2H) is a reuse program that aims 1) to divert reusable items from the landfill during student move-out, 2) to prevent additional resource consumption by selling collected items to students and community members in order 3) to raise funds for local charities and other organizations. Buses pick up students at residence halls and take them to the off-campus sale. The hope is that incoming students will reuse gently used items from the previous year's outgoing students. Most recently, the Hoosier to Hoosier sale diverted over 40,000 tons of potential waste.

Information on transportation programming at Orientation was provided by Transportation Demand Manager Kevin Whited.
