A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
We began identifying active sustainability researchers by examining the faculty profiles for the ~150 faculty affiliates of the Integrated Program in Environment (included in the optional field website url), the 45 faculty that have participated in our Sustainability Community of Practice (workshop in teaching sustainability) and faculty associated with the Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory (with history of Elinor Ostrom's theoretical approach in sustainability). From these lists we were able to identify either publications or clear evidence of scholarly work in sustainability based on their faculty web-pages. After an initial list was generated, it was shared with the Office of Sustainability Education and Research Working Group; faculty in that group were asked to review the list and suggest additional faculty that had been overlooked. All faculty included are full-time faculty (not adjunct) with appointments that include a research expectation. To determine how many departments have sustainability research, we took the faculty list and related it to the registrar's list of IU Bloomington Departments. For the total number of departments, we included every department from departmental code list, removing those that did not have their own dedicated faculty lines (for example, all faculty who teach under the Victorian Studies code have home departments in English or History, and would have been captured in their home departments.)
