A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
The Energy Matters App was created to help IU students, faculty, and staff minimize peak electrical demand. In addition to the infrastructure implications, the peak demand charge makes up 40-50% of our electricity bill. This is why we focus on minimizing the power required by the university during the times we are most likely to hit peak. Peak occurs on campus sometime between 12:00pm and 5:00pm. Effectively managing that 30 minute period helps to drastically reduce electric costs.
The app visualizes current electricity use, and peak usage over time. Recommendations are also provided on the app for ways that individuals can help reduce peak demand electricity. On days when IU predicts that the campus may be close to peak, a notification is emailed to all campus users, advising them of energy use, and encouraging a variety of behaviors which may reduce this demand.
