Sustainability Strategic Plan

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the institution’s featured program initiative, or accomplishment:

In July of 2022, Illinois State University released its first ever Sustainability Strategic Plan.

The plan, approved by the University President, outlines goals for the University, including creating more sustainability-related courses and research opportunities; prioritizing conservation and innovation for water, energy, and construction efforts; providing sustainable transportation incentives; and nurturing more leadership roles for students through campus and community partnerships.

A task force of more than 30 faculty, staff, and students from across campus worked together to research and develop the plan over the course of 18 months. Steering the collaborative effort were members of the University’s Office of Sustainability, the Center for a Sustainable Water Future, the Center for Civic Engagement, Facilities Management, University Housing, and Event Management, Dining, and Hospitality.

To implement the plan, the University President appointed a cross-institutional team of individuals to the Presdiential Sustainability Council. Led by staff of the University's Office of Sustainability, the Presidential Sustainability Council works to track and monitor campus activities for their adhearance to the plan goals and objectives while also directly encouraging change throughout the campus by enacting the goals and objectives of the plan.

Zero Waste Programs

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the second featured program initiative, or accomplishment:

Illinois State University has build a robust Zero Waste program that has grown significantly over the years, starting with composting in the kitchens of our Dining Centers many years ago. This foundation has expanded into Zero Waste Dining Centers, where all food scrap from both the prep and all catered events are now designed to be waste-free, with a dedicated Zero Waste Crew ensuring proper sorting and minimizing contamination. We’ve also made sustainability a part of campus traditions, hosting Zero Waste Tailgates before home football games to show that sustainability can be fun and seamlessly integrated into existing events. The success and excitement surrounding these tailgates inspired the President's Tent to adopt Zero Waste practices as well. In the last two years, we have hosted numerous large-scale Zero Waste events, our largest with over 2,000 attendees.

In collaboration with a commercial compost hauler, we’re making significant strides in waste reduction across campus.  We have implemented three unique public-facing Compost Kiosks where students and staff can dispose of food scraps, while also encouraging vendors to transition from single-use plastic to BPI-compostable packaging. Additionally, we've worked with the Laboratory Schools on campus to introduce composting in their lunchroom cafeterias and transition from single-use plastic cutlery to compostable.

Tree Campus Higher Education Institution

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the third featured program initiative, or accomplishment:
Illinois State University is honored to be recognized as a Tree Campus Higher Education Institution since 2008. The university’s commitment to environmental stewardship is exemplified by the Fell Arboretum, a 490-acre site with a diverse collection of over 225 tree species.

Established in 1995 by the International Society of Arboriculture, the arboretum embodies the vision of Jesse Fell, the founder of ISU, who sought to create a landscape where trees thrive in central Illinois. This vibrant space not only showcases the beauty of trees and woody plants but also fosters biodiversity by supporting a variety of native species and promoting ecological balance.

As both a living classroom and a public resource, the arboretum highlights the importance of sustainable landscapes and the role of biodiversity in preserving healthy ecosystems. To learn more about the Fell Arboretum, please visit the website https://arboretum.illinoisstate.edu/
