Has the institution conducted a comprehensive inventory within the previous three years to identify the sustainability challenges or SDGs addressed by each course?:
Copy of the sustainability course inventory:
Description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory:
We utilized and modified code shared in a webinar AASHE hosted which searched our campus course catalog for a variety of keywords that were aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The output from the code indicated which SDG(s) was most aligned with the course description. Each course was then reviewed to determine if the alignment was correct or not. After review, courses that had more than one SDG aligned with their description were retained. Courses that had an SDG that had at least one environmentally focused SDG (SDGs 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15) as well as at least one social SDG (SDGs 1-5, 8-11, 16, 17) were considered sustainability-focused courses. Courses that had two or more environmentally-focused SDGs OR two or more socially-focused SDGs were considered sustainability-inclusive. Each tagged course was reviewed to determine the SDG target that was relevant. If the course was not related to a target, then it was excluded. Courses that were assigned a sustainability-focused tag were then reviewed to determine if the discipline was aligned with sustainability. If it was not, the course was determined to be sustainability-inclusive. For example, a course on Textiles in Family and Consumer Sciences has a unit on sustainability and discusses the SDGs relevant to the industry. It is not the focus of the course, but the SDGs are both environmentally and socially-relevant. Courses were then reviewed to determine if they had been recently offered in the past three years. Courses that are on record but haven't been taught were excluded. Additionally, courses that were professional practice/internship credits were also excluded.
