ISU has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education for many years. We also participate as a member of Tree Campus Higher Education, Illinois Recycling Foundation/Illinois Recycling Association, and the Illinois Counties Solid Waste Management Association.

Narrative outlining how the institution formally shares its sustainability experiences and lessons learned with other institutions:

Assistant Director of Sustainability, Christine Bruckner, participated in the STARS cohort in 2024. Further, multiple staff members from Illinois State University attended the 2023 AASHE conference in Boston.

The director of the Office of Sustainability, Elisabeth Reed, formally shared experiences and intiatives highlighted below:

  • Presented on a panel at the 2023 Illinois Recycling Foundation/Illinois Recycling Association conference alongside other Illinois colleges/universities about campus sustainability efforts and challenges. At this conference, she also gave a walking tour to peer institutions highlighting sustainability initiatives across ISU's campus.
  • Presented and served on a panel concerning food recovery and composting solutions at the 2023 Illinois Counties Solid Waste Management Association Conference alongside other Illinois colleges.
  • Was the keynote speaker at the 2024 Illinois Counties Solid Waste Management Association conference with other Illinois colleges attending.
