3.1 Staff sustainability network or engagement program

The Office of Sustainability operates a Green Workplace Certification program. The program is open to all units and offices across the University and encourages all faculty and staff to adopt eco-friendly practices in their day-to-day work. Multiple staff from a variety of areas of the institution partipate in the Arbor Day Affiliates network. This network connects Illinois State University, the Town of Normal, the City of Bloomington, and Westminster Village to plan and implement Arbor Day activities that educate about and enhance the life of trees in our community. In recent years, the network has planned tree plantings, tree talks, and tree tours around Arbor Day.

3.2 Sustainability-focused staff training

The Division of Student Affairs has a robust professional development program for its staff. Each year, the Office of Sustainability provides a sustainability-focused training for all staff within the Division. In 2022, the topic emphasized sustainability efforts at ISU. In 2023, the topic focused on recycling and composting and provided specific tips and tools for attendees. In 2024, the topic focused on the Green Workplace Certification and provided a step-by-step guide on how to complete the steps to become certified.

Units that participate in the Green Workplace Certification are required to identify the number of faculty and staff within their unit. Additionally, staff within the Division of Student Affairs have to pre-register for events and then sign in at each session to receive professional development credit for attending.
