Alliance to Retrofit Chicago Higher Education is a partnership between Retrofit Chicago and many institutions of higher learning in the city of Chicago in which the colleges and universities commit to reducing energy use in at least one building within 5 years. IIT has chosen the IIT Tower to participate in this partnership. This partnership focuses on ecological and economic sustainability.

The Consortium fosters new and enhanced educational services and programs to citizens, businesses and other institutions in the Chicago metropolitan southland region. Through institutional collaboration, the Consortium focuses on programs that promote college readiness, support college completion, enhance educational opportunities and identify economies and efficiencies that result in streamlining and cost savings.
In 2009, SMHEC’s President’s Council declared sustainability a major priority and developed a task force to explore and support collaborative activities. The Task Force’s mission is to strengthen our members’ capacity to leverage resources and information particular to sustainability and the application of renewable practices. Since its inception, the SMHEC Sustainability Task Force has shared best practices and engaged experts to learn about the most current information on sustainability and the application of renewable practices.
