Students recently worked on a project tracking ultrafine particle and greenhouse gas emissions from the Dan Ryan Expressway, which runs along the east boarder of the IIT campus. They measured pollutant concentrations, traffic counts, and meteorological conditions. They used a 5-min as sampling interval, and operated 2 to 4 hours for more than 70 sampling days. The measurements were conducted on the transit train platform nearest to the IIT campus and on campus in front of Herman hall beginning in 2015 and continuing into the 2017-2018 academic year.

Two apartments on campus serve as a living laboratory for projects related to air quality and energy impacts in indoor environments. The space is located in Carman Hall and is called the Suite for Testing Urban Dwellings and their Indoor and Outdoor Environments, or STUDIO E. Projects students have done there include looking at ozone infiltration in multi-family buildings.

UFarmIIT is a small urban agriculture project at the Mies Campus, located in a lot among several student housing buildings. The farm is used by students for a variety of living laboratory projects, including analyzing the integration of solar energy at the site, and analyzing the number of kilowatt hours consumed per pound of produce grown.

UFarmIIT is a small urban agriculture project at the Mies Campus, located in a lot among several student housing buildings. The farm is used by students for a variety of living laboratory projects. One such student project examines the use of moisture sensor technology and remote irrigation. The project also analyzes the number of gallons of water needed to grow a pound of produce at the site.

IIT has a large international student presence, with more than half of all students coming from countries outside of the United States. One of many projects that works with students to enhance the experiences of this diverse student body is SPEAK. SPEAK is a weekly opportunity for both international and domestic students, faculty, and staff to get together, share experiences, and learn from one another. The goals of SPEAK are to engage both international and domestic students in conversation, to have international and domestic students expand their cultural knowledge, and to make friends globally.
All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend. The average number of attendees is around 30 students.
