Illinois Central College recognizes that all phases of the purchasing process (purchase, use and disposal) can profoundly effect the environment. It is the intent of green purchasing policy at ICC to encourage purchasing environmentally preferable products and services while maintaining cost and value. Environmentally preferable products and services are those that are less detrimental to the environment and human health than competing products and services. Considerations include raw materials acquisition, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, maintenance, and final disposition of the product.

A green cleaning program was adopted in 2005. The department purchases environmentally preferable products (ex Green Seal Certified) and services while maintaining cost and value. For fiscal year 2015, almost half of the supplies that the department purchased were sustainable products.
