A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
The college offers a 17 days field course to the Rocky Mountains and the Southwest respectively. This is a combined Geology/Biology Course. The students are immersed in the environment for the entire trip. They learn about ecosystems, land formations, plant and animal id and many other topics. While this sounds like it covers only the environmental aspect of sustainability, the immersive nature of the class enables deep learning and empathy for the natural world and the wild places of the world. Many of these student return and immediately join our Student Sustainability Organization due to the deeper understanding of the importance of the environment for society and for a sustainable economic future. We do discuss the costs associated with management and invasive species removal. We also discuss the social and economic aspects of wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone. In short this class is a life-changing opportunity for our students to develop a deep interest in the well-being of the planet and to help them find their place in that sustainable future.
