Adjusted net GHG emissions

Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 533.53 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 2,075.77 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Performance and baseline periods

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date Sept. 1, 2021 Sept. 1, 2018
End date Aug. 31, 2022 Aug. 31, 2019

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:

IESE calculates the carbon footprint to monitor the annual evolution of its emissions. It is decided to report the period (01.09.2018-31-08.2019) as the base year given that it is the closest previous "cycle" to the year selected as "Performance Year" in which the academic activity was not affected by the COVID pandemic. Thus, we understand that the activities of the 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 academic years were conducted under comparable operating conditions. The calculations, moreover, are verified by an independent third party (SGS Tecnos S.A.).

Part 1. Reduction in GHG emissions per person

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:

Academic year 2018-19: Within the Reduction Plan, set in the 2018-2019 academic year, the following measures were implemented during the 2019-20 academic year: - "Phase 4" of the Plan to replace conventional lighting with led lighting: classrooms G201, G301, G302, work rooms in building E. - Renewal of air conditioning equipment on the first floor of the D building. - Construction of the new Executive building on the Madrid Campus with sustainable criteria to obtain LEED "Gold Seal" certification. - Implementation of an air renewal control system -by means of AI- based on the CO2 concentration of each space (classrooms, auditoriums, dining rooms, common areas, etc.) to minimize energy consumption. - As a compensatory measure, green energy was contracted in the next renewal of the Barcelona Campus supply contract. - Installation of an energy consumption monitoring system that provides alarms in the event of after-hours or excess consumption. - Installation of AI algorithms to minimize energy consumption in the start-up of air conditioning in large spaces (classrooms, auditoriums, etc.). - Installation of electric car chargers at the Barcelona Campus. - Installation of charging points for electric motorcycles at the Barcelona Campus. Academic year 2019-20: Within the Reduction Plan, set for the 2019-2020 academic year, the following measures were implemented during the 2020-21 academic year: - "Phase 5" of the Plan to replace conventional lighting with LED lighting: classroom B-102, garden spotlights, offices in building B and E. - Renewal of air conditioning equipment in the C building. - Installation of presence and twilight sensors in common areas and open spaces. - Expansion of the air renewal control system -by means of AI-, based on CO2 concentration, to minimize energy consumption. - Green energy was contracted in the next renewal of the Madrid Campus supply contract. - Installation of electric car chargers at the Madrid Campus. Academic year 2020-21: As part of the Reduction Plan, set for the 2020-21 academic year, the following measures were implemented during the 2021-22 academic year: - "Phase 6" of the Plan to replace conventional lighting with LED lighting: work rooms, offices and dining hall at the North Campus. - Reduction of the number of luminaires in common areas and their reuse in other areas. - Installation of photovoltaic panels on some building roofs at the Barcelona and Madrid Campuses. - Awareness messages "good practices" to minimize energy consumption. - Campaign to promote the use of the train on our Barcelona-Madrid route.

Additional documentation to support the submission:
Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

The methodology applied for the calculation of emissions has been the same for the baseline year and the performance year.

We achieved a drastic reduction in Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported electricity from the 2018-19 (baseline year) to the 2021-22 (performance year), due to the decision to start purchasing electricity from renewable energies with guarantees of origin (GdO).

All electrical energy for the Barcelona and Madrid campuses is purchased with certificates of guaranteed origin (GdO).

It is important to note that IESE verifies the calculation of emissions by a third party company.

Attached is a file with the detail of electricity consumption and emissions for these two academic years.
