A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
The program focuses on restoring ecosystems, addressing energy and climate issues, and developing the skills to understand and manage the ever-changing relationship between humans and the natural world. Through an interdisciplinary approach to interactions between the biological/physical world and human institutions, students will (1) apply science to understanding ecosystems and natural resources; (2) understand the policy and social implications of environmental issues; (3) gain knowledge and skills to understand, analyze, address and manage the consequences of human actions on the physical, biological, and cultural world; (4) gain knowledge and skills to seek out the information and resources necessary to understand complex environmental issues; (5) develop the writing, speaking, and electronic communication skills needed to communicate with the public and professionals concerning the environmental sciences; (6) apply critical thinking skills as the basis for decision making and sound value judgments.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
The program’s purpose is to educate students to investigate, evaluate, and solve complex environmental resources engineering problems. The program prepares responsible leaders who will sustain, restore and protect our natural resources for the environment and communities.

Through an integrated approach to learning by doing students will (1) apply engineering analysis and design to investigate, evaluate, and solve critical environmental resources problems, while protecting, restoring and sustaining the environment and communities who depend on access to natural resources; (2) practice engineering with the highest professional standards, demonstrating respect for social, ethical, cultural, environmental, economic, and regulatory concerns; (3) continue their professional development by obtaining engineering licensure and other certifications, completing postgraduate study, and continually advancing their knowledge and skill base; (4) demonstrate leadership in the profession as well as in diverse and interdisciplinary team settings, drawing out the best in their co-workers and effectively communicating and collaborating with a range of stakeholders and the public.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
The interdisciplinary program provides students with tools for understanding the complex relationships between human communities and both “natural” and built environments. The program cultivates critical analysis of environmental problems using tools from a variety of disciplines, helps students discern among environmental messages as well as communicate them effectively, and enables them to act as informed citizens and professionals. This requires knowledge of earth systems science as well as human systems, informed by careful reflection upon ethical concerns and societal values.Upon completion of the program students will be able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of how environmental challenges involve multiple perspectives and social contexts, and recognize the role of power and privilege in shaping them; (2) demonstrate literacy with earth systems; (3) use humanistic, creative, and social scientific knowledge to understand environmental challenges; (4) understand how different research methods lead to diverse environmental knowledges; (5) critically evaluate normative claims and representations about the environment.

Sustainability Minor

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
The Sustainability Minor explores real-world problems from a variety of academic perspectives by incorporating curricula from across the natural and social sciences, as well as humanities and the arts. Its robust, interdisciplinary nature catalyzes intellectual inquiry, systems thinking, and agency to tackle the most pressing socio-ecological challenges of our time. The Sustainability Minor is designed to engage students from every college, transcending disciplines while complementing any major. It further provides a coherent pathway to fulfill General Education and Diversity and Common Ground requirements (if the student chooses). The minor can be of particular value to students seeking careers in the growing field of sustainability, public policymaking or community development, or in applying sustainability concepts and practices to their chosen career pathway.

Sustainable Food Systems Minor

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (2nd program):
The Sustainable Food Systems Minor is an interdisciplinary course of study from all three colleges. It provides students with a holistic food systems perspective and an increased ability to access careers and graduate programs related to food systems. The minor examines topics related to production, processing, distribution, and consumption of food, and equity and inclusion issues of food sovereignty, indigenous perspectives, and equitable access to all dimensions of the food system.

Appropriate Technology Minor

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (3rd program):
A minor in appropriate technology allows students to familiarize themselves with promising technologies, while also developing their understanding of the political, social, and economic processes by which choices about technologies are - and might be - made. Courses enable students to combine theory and practice, often through hands-on projects at the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT). CCAT is a student-run, living laboratory and demonstration home located on campus. It models effective energy use, a photovoltaic electrical system, solar hot water heating, greywater recycling, a composting privy, organic gardening, low-impact building materials, and many other technologies, in a residential setting.
