Equity Advocate Program
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
An Equity Advocate is a faculty, staff or administration member appointed by a Department Chair or Dean to work within a department’s search committee or unit to ensure that diversity and equity are infused and considered in all aspects of the hiring process. The Equity Advocate will facilitate a close working relationship with the search committee members to help them identify equity issues and goals within their department or discipline.
The role of the Equity Advocate is to observe and participate in the search process in the following ways:
• consult and review the job description,
• help identify appropriate venues for advertising,
• review the diversity, equity, and inclusion related interview questions, and
• be present at committee deliberations.
The Equity Advocate does not need to be present during the interviews. The Equity Advocate is not a decision-maker and will not have access to candidates’ application materials or vote in the selection process.
