A brief description of the institution’s green event certification program, including the specific components selected above:

The Green Event Certification program is specifically designed to curb solid waste generation from events held on campus. Program coordinators consult with event organizers prior to the actual event to review menus and planned activities and to identify zero waste alternatives. Program coordinators attend events, doing “trash talks” with attendees and diverting food waste and recycling. Event organizers complete a self-assessment, and, if their event scores enough points, they earn a Green Event Certification certificate, which they can display at events and use in their marketing material. The Green Events Certification program has been integrated into the Clubs & Activities Event Application as well as the Facilities Request Form for events.

Specific items included in the checklist that earn the organization points toward their green event certification include: no paper advertisements are used, advertisements for the event highlight sustainable features of the event, sufficient compost and recycling containers are reserved for the event (1 bin of each type for every 50 attendees), Campus recycling has been contacted about the event, one organic food entree will offered at the event, a vegetarian and/or vegan entree will be offered, durable/reusable dishware will be used, beverages will be served from coolers rather than from single use containers (1 cooler per 80 guests), sufficient recycling bins are prepared and signage is included (1 bin for every compost and trash bin), announcement is made at start of event that it is zero waste and patrons are directed to proper waste receptacles, and volunteers man compost/recycling/trash bins to assist attendees with proper disposal (can be provided if needed).
