Is the institution formally designated as a minority-serving institution, historically disadvantaged institution, indigenous institution, or the equivalent?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution’s formal designation:

In 2013, Humboldt State University became a Hispanic-Serving Institution and has continued to maintain the designation since then. This means it is an institution participating in federal programs designed to assist colleges or universities in the United States that attempt to assist first generation, majority low income Hispanic students. More specifically, the definition posed by the U.S. Department of Education defines a Hispanic-Serving Institution as a college or university with an undergraduate full-time equivalent enrollment of at least 25 percent Hispanic students.

In 2016, HSU received $930,006 from the US Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution for the Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics Articulation Program.

The purpose of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions – Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (HSI STEM) and Articulation Programs (Title III, Part F) is to:
-increase the number of Hispanic and other low-income students attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics; and
-to develop model transfer and articulation agreements between two-year and four-year institutions in such fields.
