A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
A community of professors and instructors representing multiple academic faculties meets on a regular basis. They build capacity and drive pan-faculty initiatives to foster curriculum development and teaching and learning practices focused on sustainability.

The group of approximately 56 meets 4-5 times a year. Meetings include professional development training – such as a guest speaker, webinar or literature discussion – sharing of experiences and resources as well as initiative planning. The group’s primary goals are:

1. Build within each member the capacity for knowledge and understanding about sustainability and what it means at Humber. This will be in service of the leadership activities that faculty will be taking on in the future.

2. Build awareness about sustainability across the institution, driven by the faculty champions. The group recognizes the importance of large-scale awareness and engagement before real changes can be meaningfully made at the curricular level.

The Faculty Champions group have developed resources for their colleagues on going paperless in the classroom and how to integrate the Humber Arboretum’s outdoor learning spaces into their lesson plans and much more.

A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (1st program):
The target audience of the employee educators Faculty Champions group are all 3363 faculty members employed by Humber College. Faculty Champions are encouraged to communicate and discuss the sustainability topics they learn about with their faculty peers at meetings. In addition, the Innovative Learning department at Humber sends out dedicated emails to all faculty members with invitations to attend Community of Practice Events, of which the Faculty Champions is part.

Communities of Practice explore topics according to the community members’ interests. Each community is a place for dialogue, sharing of resources and ideas, grappling with difficult topics, and exploring new ways of thinking, learning, and doing.

Humber also hosts an annual conference for faculty and staff called the Humber Showcase, where the Office of Sustainability presents. The Faculty Champions group is highlighted within this event and all are encouraged to join. https://humber.ca/innovativelearning/online-communities-of-practice/
