Documentation
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
Three
A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
A faculty member (a long-time member of the faculty who has served as Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning) reviewed every course from every department, as listed in the current catalog of courses. He read course descriptions and in some cases learning outcomes to determine whether the course was a sustainability-focused course, a sustainability-inclusive course, or not connected to sustainability. Hence the numbers in part 1 above are the total number of courses on offer at Hope College and the total number of courses on offer in each of the two sustainability categories.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each offering or section of a course was counted as an individual course
A brief description of how courses with multiple offerings or sections were counted:
Most courses with multiple sections are counted only once. For example, every semester there are multiple sections of Economics 211, but it is counted only once. On the other hand, some courses are placeholder courses--courses that have the same number but are actually quite different in content. For example, IDS 100 is our First Year Seminar. All FYS's have the same course number (IDS 100) but different section numbers. Some of the FYS courses are sustainability courses (of one kind or the other) while some do not have any connection to sustainability. Hence the multiple listing of IDS 100 courses.
