A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive experience(s) offered by the institution:
1.GCOE-INet International Summer School provides unique opportunities for Ph.D. international and Japanese students. During the one week, participants stayed in Samani Town in the Hidaka Mountains and study agriculture, forestry, geology and fisheries through hands-on experiences and are encouraged to be engaged in sustainability research and to develop sustainable future. The program is co-organized by Graduate School of Environmental Science and Graduate School of Agriculture.
2. Furano Natural School
Graduate School of Public Policy offers an Environmental Educational Program in partnership with Furano Group. The course include 3-day field trip, where students learn about the natural environment by experiences. Recent experiences include planting trees and rehabilitating abandoned agricultural firms.
3. ProSPER.Net Young Researchers' School
ProSPER.Net is an academic Network for Education for Sustainable Development, on which Hokkaido University sits as a board member, and comprises more than 20 institutions in Asia-Pacific region. This year's summer school, its 3rd, was held at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Under the theme of "Building a Resilient Society in Asia", two Ph D. students from Hokkaido University joined other participants from member universities and learned how research can be practically applied and how sustainable livelihoods should be promoted through the experience of helping community development projects being undertaken by Universitas Gadjah Mada,
