Tree Campus USA, 2012 - 2019:
HWS first established the Tree Advisory Committee in 2012. Each year since then, the five core standards of Tree Campus USA have been upheld and advanced, with HWS earning Tree Campus USA recognition in 2019 for the seventh consecutive year. The Tree Advisory Committee meets twice annually and includes individuals, representing students, faculty, facility, and community members. Approximately 30 hours of volunteer labor by students was dedicated to tree care and urban forest management. As part of our City's annual Arbor Day Observation, the HWS Tree Advisory Committee partnered by providing 2 William Smith EcoRep students to offer a short, tree-centric, hands-on activity to the city's elementary school children that attend the Arbor Day tree planting event. Seedlings were given to all attendees.
Bee Campus USA, 2019:
In February 2019, HWS became a designated Bee Campus USA. Our students and campus community incorporates pollinator conservation and education in our land management, coursework, service learning, research, and community engagement. There are honeybee hives kept at HWS Fribolin Farm as well as land and no-mow areas set aside for native pollinators on campus. In 2019, HWS Fribolin Farm extended their reach by creating a perennial Pollinator Patch on main campus at 601 S. Main Street. The site contains various seeded and planted perennials that are preferred by, and attract, beneficial insects.
