A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:

At Hobart and William Smith, there has been one major construction project during the past three years. For LEED certification, the newly constructed 65,000-square-foot Gearan Center for the Performing Arts established a “Construction Waste Management Plan.” In the plan, a person was designated as the recycling coordinator. As each new subcontractor came to the site, the recycling coordinator presented a copy of the plan and identified the recycling areas. The plan also established a waste management goal to divert 75% (by weight) of the construction debris from landfill disposal to other destinations for salvage, reuse, or recycle for the Gearan Center project. The plan also established a communication plan among contractors and appropriate documentation protocol.
