A brief description of the green building rating system(s) used and/or a list of certified buildings and ratings:

The new 64,299 sq. ft. Gearan Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in 2016, is certified LEED BD+C Gold.

We also constructed a new seating area for our dining hall that has followed LEED principles and includes elements that reflect the Colleges’ commitment to sustainability and the environment. These features include environmentally sensitive finishes (paint, carpets, flooring, wood), LED lighting for new fixtures, energy efficient equipment, trayless dining and a new dishwasher that saves both energy and water consumption.

The green building guidelines or policies:

Selection (from Section 1.3) of guidelines from the Climate Action Plan:

A. All new construction and major renovations will require a “sustainable source” analysis for heat and electricity (ex. Geothermal, Wood Pellet System, solar, wind, etc.).

B. All new construction and major renovations will require an evaluation of technologies that minimize emissions.

C. New construction and major renovations will require a projection of annual emissions

i. The report must include associated ‘offset’ cost
ii. The report will be delivered to the Vice President of Finance and President of the Colleges.
iii. The report findings will be viewed as part of the annual operating expense of the building and budgets will be adjusted accordingly.

D. New construction and major renovations will use LEED 3.0 Energy and Atmosphere standards (above the minimum state/regional efficiency code), including the LEED 3.0 Enhanced Commissioning process. The Energy and Climate Committee will review success of efficiency standard after each project with the intent of increasing the efficiency standard in future projects.

E. Major new construction and renovations must be individually metered, tied into the campus building management system, and incorporate a live reporting system in a prominent location in the building.

Additionally, recent strategic planning efforts have committed HWS to pursue LEED requirements for all major projects.

Building-level energy metering Yes
Use of environmentally preferable materials (e.g. guidelines to minimize the life cycle impacts associated with building materials) Yes
Indoor environmental quality (i.e. guidelines to protect the health and comfort of building occupants) Yes
Water consumption (e.g. requiring minimum standards of efficiency for indoor and outdoor water use) Yes
Building-level water metering Yes

A brief description of the green building guidelines or policies and/or a list or sample of buildings covered:

Other than the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts, HWS had no new construction or major renovation projects in the previous five years.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:

Hobart and William Smith Colleges have endeavored to be sustainable in our design and construction efforts for many years, with leadership of those efforts driven by our Associate Director for Planning and Construction, who is a LEED AP and a graduate of the SUNY-College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Additionally, the HWS sustainability officer sits on the design team for new construction and major renovation projects and ensures that projects meet sustainability criteria. In addition, as a signatory to the President's Climate Commitment, we have committed to all major projects meeting USGBC LEED requirements.
