The SAE (Student Services Office) is in charge of all tasks related to student life, foreign student integration, and cultural training and preparedness. 33% of HEC Montréal students are non-native, coming from more than 140 countries. HEC Montréal is a French-Canadian university, and deserve the francophone community of Canada and the world, even though it is located in North America. The concept of minority, diversity and inclusion is thereof unique and particular. This extremely diversified student body makes it hard to define what a minority is, and the main challenge is not to prepare or train local students to diversity, equity and inclusion, but rather prepare newcomers to the Montréal’s life, cultural and language specificity, and terrible winter. Québec education system being different from the rest of the world, most foreign students have to follow a special preparation year (année préparatoire) to be up to the same level of local student. During this preparation year, special introduction activities will be followed by the student to prepare them to the Montréal’s life. Moreover, the SAE offers a wide array of integration and cultural awareness activities. The SAE also organize and promote “intercultural activities” and provide students, local and newcomers, with a complete online library of documents about cultural differences and acceptance.
