A brief description of the open access policy, including the date adopted, any incentives or supports provided, and the repository(ies) used:
Being a Canadian University receiving most of its research funds from public sources, HEC Montréal must oblige to the “Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications”. This Policy was published by The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to improve access to the results of Agency-funded research, and to increase the dissemination and exchange of research results. This policy is HEC’s guiding principle regarding public access to the research generated by his faculties.
Moreover, every HEC’s faculty who publishs a document (articles, book or book chapters) must report it in a central internal research management database, called “ZoneRecherche”. After reporting their publications, their public profile (accessible to all from the main web page) is automatically updated with the list of their publications and a link to HEC’s library website for download. HEC’s graduate students’ memoirs and thesis are uploaded in the library’s public database.
Nonetheless, HEC Montréal adopted its “Politique de propriété intellectuelle” (Intellectual Property policy) in 2003, and reviewed it for the last time in 2013. Some research produce patented technologies, and some others, such as business case, should not be made public to avoid cheating by student, it is extremely important that all member of HEC Montréal understand which works must be made public, and which must be protected.
Consequently, HEC Montréal lives by the principle that knowledge developed by its researchers has to be made public. The first action principle of the Politique and the third funding value of the provincial action plan, on which the Politique is based, recognizes the responsibility of all its members to transfer the fruit of their research to the society. The Politique, that apply to all 11 department of the school, details how works can be share, and also how researchers can benefit from a protection of their discovery through various mechanism. The Politique applies as well to HEC faculties and students. HEC recognizes the right of researchers to make public any findings or discovery at an appropriate moment.
