The 2017 GHG audit was conducted by a team of students enrolled in the DESS in Sustainability under the supervision of the Sustainability and Infrastructure departments. There tasks consisted of reviewing the initiatives taken by HEC Montréal, calculating the GHG produced by the school activities (scope 1 and 2), determining the other knows sources (scope 3) and producing an inclusive report with recommendations and targets for future actions. Their work will also serve as a homework for one of their class.

In 2017, HEC Montréal building management worked with a group of MBA students to review its janitorial maintenance management system and develop an improved program to track daily tasks, train and prepare new janitors, and ensure daily routes are properly followed by all janitors. This project was part of the MBA courses Business Process Improvement, and was supervised by one of HEC’s professor.

In 2017, students of the DESS in sustainable development management have been assigned on the project to analyze the requirement to obtain the Fair Trade Campus certification for the cafeteria, restaurant and cathering services. This assignement is realized in collaboration with the COOP HEC.

Hectare Urbain is HEC’s urban agriculture project, integrating sustainability concept into an institutional and community project in line with the school mission. It promote exchange and thinking around food issues, knowledge development, awareness toward resource and biodiversity preservation, and valorization of students and faculty knowledge for the community.

In 2017, students participating in a business process improvment class have been assigned a research project related to the office supply purchasing by the school departments. The project consist in developing acceptable procurement process for the various school buyers that meets the "free shipping" policy of the new supplier.

In 2017, with the support of the HEC Student Association (AEHEC), a group of student decided to tackle the project of making the campus bicycle friendly, based on the Vélo-Sympathique certification program. This initiative will include a review of the bicycle infrastructure, a survey of commuting habits, a communication plan, an infrastructure improvement project, and crowdfunding for acquisition of equipment.

In 2016-17, a student of the DESS in Sustainability Management completed an internship with the sustainability direction to participate in the building BOMA BEST and ICI on Recycle certification process. Part of his mandate included developing and supervising the waste audit project, analyzing all waste and recycling flows, and submitting the ICI on Recycle certification files (Recyc-Québec’s waste and recycling certification program).

In 2016, one of the Sustainability DESS students conducted research work regarding the water management and issues at HEC Montréal. His work were used by Hectare Urbain to promote and explain urban agriculture and resource management.

Many of the MBA students follow an optional logististic class where the final project is based on a real field work. Annually, the course professor, Marie-Hélène Jobin, will develop some of the project in collaboration with HEC administrative departments to improve some of their process and bring fresh ideas to manager. Example includes paperless admission documents database creation, or online class programming improvement.

IDEOS is a center in research in social business management. Through their work and activity, they became a reference for the school and governing bodies regarding social and cultural business, innovation and research. Also, the student group Expression is dedicated to the promotion of arts and culture in the school and is organizing various event. Finally, another student group called Artistes en Affaires, promote business related to arts and organize singing and act by and for the students.
