A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive experience(s) offered by the institution:
Tropical Ecology and Sustainability taught by Angela Costanza - This summer General Education course consists of a travel component to Costa Rica. After an introduction to the issues and questions pertaining to sustainability and the impact of humans on tropical ecosystems, students will examine how human values and choices affect ecosystems and develop their own perspectives on sustainability from in-country experiences. HPU also offers students the opportunity to participate in the Travel 2 Change program, developed by HPU faculty member, Thomas Kohler. The Travel 2 Change program gets students to travel to various countries around the world, connect with the local people of that area, and contribute in some way to benefit that local community. Here is a link to a video describing the Travel 2 Change program and the success of its first year in 2011: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0bOAyb414k.
