The Council on Sustainability and Social Responsibility serves as Haverford College’s committee on investor responsibility. CSSR provides advice around environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investment considerations to the Investment Committee of the Board of Managers. CSSR also has a dedicated portfolio of stocks on which it may vote proxies and sponsor shareholder resolutions.
CSSR receives concerns and suggestions from the Haverford College community related to investment policies and practices. As circumstances warrant, it will engage students and the broader Haverford community in conversation on ESG issues of importance and provide guidance on their application to Haverford's broader investment activities.
In making recommendations, CSSR seeks to carry out its responsibilities in a manner consistent with institutional policies, priorities, and values. CSSR recognizes that sustaining Haverford’s mission requires stewarding all of its various endowments, including the ethical endowment that shapes the College’s institutional character and the financial endowment that allows it to fulfill its mission now and for future generations.
a. Explore ways to invest its capital to affect positive Environmental, Social and Governance(ESG) impact. To this end, the Committee will select and maintain a portfolio of public equities in corporations for which CISR believes there are possibilities to effect ESG progress through shareholder activism.
b. Engage students in voting proxies on shareholder and corporate resolutions for the CISR portfolio of stocks that align with the Committee's goals for positive ESG impact.
c. Consider opportunities to sponsor or co-sponsor shareholder resolutions that it feels will have significantly positive ESG impact and will garner significant investor and corporate attention.
d. Engage the students and broader Haverford community in a conversation on environmental, social and governance (ESG) of importance and provide guidance on their application to Haverford's broader investment activities.

CSSR convened a community conversation around fossil fuel investment policies in 2015-16 that led to modifications of the College's investment policies and their treatment of sustainability issues.
