A brief description of the program, policy, or practice:
All upper-class housing at Haverford is gender-neutral. Upper class students choose who they wish to live with and in what settings-rooms, suites, apartments or houses. It is left up to each student to choose who they wish to live with and in what kind of housing. Bathrooms in upper-class housing are gender neutral.
First-year students are housed in single-sex rooms, suites or apartments that are coed by floor. In the the first-year apartments, the apartments and thus the bathrooms are not gender-neutral. In the other two first year residence halls, most of the bathrooms are coed. however, during customs week (first year orientation) the students in each customs group make a collective decision regarding the showers and bathrooms on the hall. The customs group works as a hall community in order to arrange a situation that fits everyone's level of comfort.
Whenever requested by a student, the Office of Residential Life works with that student on their housing options in an effort to meet the special needs of that student.
