In September 2014, the Physical Plant and Campus Planning Committee (PPCPC) approved the Sustainability Policy Statement that outlines mission and the structure the sustainability committee. The duty and responsibility of the sustainability committee includes but is not limited to: (1) defining and reevaluating annually the mission of the Sustainability Committee; (2) defining tangible and attainable goals that lead toward the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality; (3) overseeing the implementation of the College’s Sustainability Plan; (4) assisting the administration in identifying sustainability initiatives as well as potential funding; (5) supporting the Office of Facilities and Maintenance (F&M) in its implementation of campus sustainability improvement endeavors; and (6) actively educating the campus community about the progress of the College’s Sustainability Program.

The committee is currently chaired by the Assistant Vice President of Capital Projects and Facilities (staff). The committee has one faculty representative, one representative from the office of Business Affairs, and two student representatives (one from the Associated Students of Harvey Mudd College and another from student group ESW/MOSS). The Sustainability Program Manager also actively sits and participates on the committee, though is not officially a member of the committee in the policy.

The Hixon Center for Sustainable Environmental Design develops strategies and coordinates college wide activities, research, teaching and practices. The Hixon Center sponsors integration and development of sustainably in academic curriculum, raises awareness about environmental issues, and urges students, faculty, and staff to engage in collaborative efforts to find ways to reduce the campus' carbon footprint. The Hixon Center's programs can all be found on its website: hmc.edu/hcsed. The Hixon Center also partners with non-profits organizations to engage students in community dialogues and events related to sustainability issues.

- The spur of strategic sustainability action from the Sustainability Committee and more, which includes the submission of the STARS report, the production of the College's first-ever sustainability report, and the ongoing creation of a 10-year GHG emissions inventory.
- The increased presence and visibility of sustainability on campus, including through social media channels, mailed newsletters, and events campus
- The planning and hosting of campus speaker events and workshops, including the Biennial Conference for Sustainable Design and Solutions, the "Black, Gold and Green" Speaker Series, the "Eco-Engage" Sustainability Dialogue Series, and more.
- The coordination and management of existing academic and research programs, including the Emphasis in Environmental Analysis, the Rasmussen Summer Research Fund, the Hixon Summer Research Fellowship program, and more.
