Does the institution formally designate sustainability courses in its standard course catalog or listings?:
Yes

A brief description of the formal sustainability course designation program, including the methodology used to identify and approve courses for inclusion:
There is not necessarily a separate course designation program for sustainability courses. However, standard procedure is that when faculty member submit their courses to their respective institutional portals across the Claremont Colleges (including Harvey Mudd College), they must tag their courses with appropriate "course areas." The singular formal course designation available across the Claremont Colleges is "Environmental Analysis." Courses that are given this tag meet the STARS requirement that sustainability and environmental topics are either the primary and explicit focus of those courses, or that the primary focus of that course is applying sustainability within a field and providing the skills/knowledge connected to understanding or solving sustainability challenges. There are Environmental Analysis departments at multiple Claremont Colleges (not Harvey Mudd College), so those courses are officially listed as "EA-###) - but courses that are taught out of other departments can be given an EA tag, and thus inform students when they register for courses that those courses have a particular focus on sustainability and environment. Courses with the "Environmental Analysis," whether they are based out of a campus' EA department or are given the tag based on the instructors' discretion, have those tags approved by faculty committees and the registrar's office before being available on the course registration portal for students. There is additionally a Claremont Colleges-wide Environmental Analysis steering committee, focused on addressing environmental analysis curriculum and on the course availability for students on sustainability and environmental topics. Students can selectively search for courses with a designated Environmental Analysis tag by going to the course registration portal and selecting for it under "Course Area."
