1. In Fall 2022, in ENGR 321 (Instrumentation & Statistics), students use a thermal imaging camera to scan at least one building on campus to identify places where heat is escaping from the building. They will also scan the interior to find power “vampires” – those are devices that use electricity even when they are not turned on. The vampires give off heat and therefore will show up hot on the camera.

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Energy:

1. In Fall 2022, two of our Engineering seniors are working on a project to redesign the globes on the campus’ outdoor light poles so that the light will all be reflected downward rather than some going up toward space. The goal is to help the campus qualify for the Dark Skies initiative and to potentially be able use smaller wattage bulbs to light the same amount of area on the ground. They are also looking at whether they can incorporate a motion detector into the globe so that the lights only come on when someone (or a deer) is nearby.
2. In Spring 2022 a student in Introduction to Sustainability did a cost-benefit analysis of how Energy Star laundry machines would reduce energy use and save the College money.
3. In Spring 2022 a student in Introduction to Sustainability did a cost-benefit analysis of how modern windows would provide thousands of dollars of utility savings if they were installed in a very old dormitory building.

1. In Spring 2022 a student in Introduction to Sustainability did a cost-benefit analysis of how dining services could reduce meat on the menu to reduce the campus carbon and water footprints.

1. In Spring 2022 two students in Introduction to Sustainability did a cost-benefit analysis of how polystyrene to-go food containers could be replaced with reusable food containers.
2. In Winter 2022 students in Environmental Economics completed a project that studied how better signage might increase recycling rates on campus.
