A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:

The 12 question ASK survey from Ohio State University was used to assess students in Fall 2022.


A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :

The undergraduate student population of 951 was invited to respond to the survey. Two gift cards were offered to randomly selected respondents to increase participation and 167 responses (7%) were received. Of those responses, 56% identified as female, 31% as male. The breakdown across classes was approximately 24.5% first years, 21.5% sophomores, 25% juniors, 24.5% seniors.


A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):

Across all 12 questions, approximately 65% of responses were correct. Students had the greatest success (92%) knowing that income inequality has increased 92% of the time. Students had the least success (28%) knowing that depleted ocean fish stocks is primarily due to fishermen seeking to maximize their catch.
