Does the institution have an ongoing program to encourage students in multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct sustainability research?:
Yes

A brief description of the student sustainability research program:

The Environmental Studies Program has a research endowment that supports summer research in sustainability. The endowment was established by the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation and provides 10-15k per year which has supported summer research students and faculty with salary, supplies, and travel-related to their projects. The endowment is open to applications from any faculty member at Gustavus. Students can propose a project but must have a faculty sponsor. The endowment has supported projects proposed by students or faculty in the geology, biology, geography, history, physics, environmental studies, and chemistry departments during the reporting period.

Participation of Interdisciplinary Program Faculty: A candidate who is up for review may indicate to the Provost a desire for input by faculty members from interdisciplinary programs with which the candidate is involved. The Faculty Personnel Committee Chair will notify the chair of the interdisciplinary program that the request has been made, and that letters are required of tenured faculty as identified by the program chair. The letter writer must specify that they are writing as a member of a specific interdisciplinary program and the Provost’s Office will establish a separate file for these letters (as is currently done for “solicited,” “unsolicited,” and “department” letters).

Yes

A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research:

The Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library provides research guides and subscribes to multiple journals relevant to sustainability research. These guides provide resources for student researchers to improve their ability to cite primary sources and help them locate topical primary literature by listing multiple databases.
