A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
The apiary at the Meijer Campus in Holland is designed to align with GVSU's endeavors and commitment to sustainability; promote the importance of the honey bees in our society through education and awareness; and provide opportunities for interdisciplinary studies and research by students and faculty. In April 2012, two beehives were installed at the Meijer Campus with a solar powered digital scale under one of the hives. The GV Bee Keepers constructed the hives, while Engineering and Computing students developed the solar powered digital scale (known as the BeeCloud Project). This allow us to contribute in NASA's HoneyBeeNet project. At the time of installation, The Apiary at the Grand Valley State University Meijer Campus in Holland is the first apiary in Michigan to contribute to this project.

A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):
Funded by a grant through the Center for Scholarly and Creative Excellence, students from the Engineering and Computer Science departments built a beehive scale complete with SMS transmission capability that can upload data to the cloud. Data from the hive is collected every 15 minutes during the day along with minimal weather information. The data's uploaded to the cloud and shared with the HoneyBeeNet Project, a NASA endeavor. This data documents the current status of regional nectar flows and what impacts climate and land use changes have on bee colonies.
