Take the Stairs health and wellness campaign

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

The Take the Stairs campaign is a 6 week promotion of taking the stairs versus the elevator for students, faculty and staff at Grand Valley State University. Stairwells and elevators were identified and signs posted encouraging taking the stairs versus the elevator during a 6 week period October-November 2013. The program also took place during the same time frame in 2012.

A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):

Pre and post surveys were administered and findings indicate that those reporting high physical activity reported higher likelihood of stair usage as well. This may be because the individual was already active to lead to stair use. Further analysis is being done to demonstrate impact on encounter with the signs and stair use over elevator use. Though there was limited data, trends also showed a decrease in elevator usage at one location in 2013. The ultimate goal from this campaign is to implement permanent signage at Grand Valley State University promoting stair use over elevator use to increase physical activity.
