Yes

The name of the campaign(s):
Recyclemania and Conserve Energy Challenge

A brief description of the campaign(s):

RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs in the United States that provides the campus community with a fun, proactive activity in waste reduction. Over a 10-week period, campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. The main goal of this event is to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization. RecycleMania provides many ways to gain recognition, including RecycleMania trophies, awards, and participant certificates.

Conserve Energy Challenge: Each community’s energy consumption will be monitored during the month of October 2011 and February 2012 then compared to the consumption in the community for the previous 3 years average for the same months. The community that shows the most improvement will be able to choose from a list of community sustainability improvement initiatives.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):

Recyclemania: GVSU recycled more than 1,357 tons of material including paper, cardboard, books, glass and plastic, and 36.7 percent of the university’s waste was recycled. Last year, Grand Valley placed 36th out of 512 universities and colleges competing in overall waste minimization.  http://www.gvsu.edu/housing/recyclemania-291.htm
