A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
Goshen College and students, staff, and faculty associated with the college have been
active in sustainable policy at the local level in several capacities.
In 2019, GC President Rebecca Stoltzfus collaborated with Mayor Jeremy Stutsman and lobbied the City Council for the creation of a department of environmental resilience for the City of Goshen; and GC provided financial support to help launch the initiative, which was subsequently approved by City Council.
Additionally, Goshen College students spoke in support of a climate action resolution at a Goshen City Council public hearing in May 2019. The resolution subsequently passed.
Then in the Fall of 2019, GC students read a statement of support at the final public hearing vote to establish a new department of Environmental Resilience, an ordinance which also passed.
Also in 2019, Goshen College hosted the Indiana Climate Leadership Summit, an “annual, statewide conference specially designed for mayors, city leaders, and community partners to discuss how to prepare for the changing climate.”
