A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
Goshen College partners with the Fundacion de Sobrevivencia Cofán (FSC) and its sister
organization, the Cofan Survival Fund (CSF), a US-based 501c3 organization that raises
support for its Ecuadorian partner. The FSC was founded in 1999 by the indigenous Cofan
people who reside in the eastern rainforest of Ecuador. Goshen College students participate in
an off-campus May Term course, Ecological Economics in Ecuador, and the semester long
Ecuador Study Service Term (SST), focusing on sustainability and indigenous cultures. The
college programs provide monetary support for the Cofan’s land conservation initiatives and
bring awareness to the plight of the indigenous people, while the Cofan provide legal support,
community connections, and classroom space for the SST program as well as guides, lodging
and river transport for the May Term course.
