A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
INTERCULTURAL GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES Two opportunities to gain perspectives about race and racism are coming up soon this spring semester for staff, faculty and students: 1) "Race: The Power of Illusion" is a three-part PBS series that explores the origin of the concept of race as it has evolved and been used in the U.S. to justify discrimination of various groups of people. There will be 3 meetings over the lunch hour on Feb. 2, 9 and 16 in the Koinonia Room of College Mennonite Church, with a light lunch served. This series was first held in fall of 2009 at Goshen College. 2) "Introduction to Anti-Racism" is a 2-part series, held 10 a.m.-12 noon on March 9 and 10, also in the Koinonia Room. We will focus on the basic concepts of how racism works and explore steps toward resistance. Both of these series help fulfill the staff/administrative faculty appraisal factor for growing in intercultural competency, but students and teaching faculty are encouraged to attend.
