Consistent with our Jesuit and Catholic identity, respect for creation and the integral development and flourishing of the human person are inseparable from a faith that does justice. Thus, the CREATE Committee is an ad hoc University committee responsible for making recommendations to the Cabinet regarding the University’s impact on and stewardship of the environment. The CREATE Committee is composed of Gonzaga faculty, staff, and students who are concerned about environmental stewardship and sustainability.

A brief description of each sustainability office:
The Office of Sustainability works with the Gonzaga community to continue fostering a culture of sustainability that is resilient and responsive to the dynamics of higher education and our changing world. To guide their work, the office uses the CREATE model. It is an acronym that stands for Care for Creation, Reflection, Experience, Action, Teaching, and Engagement. The sustainability office has one FTE employee as well as ten part-time student employees.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Over the past five years, the Office of Sustainability has provided students, faculty, and staff with complimentary bus passes for the Spokane Transit Authority. The office has also hosted four Sustainability Film Screenings as well as panel and group discussions about Pope Francis’ Encyclical, which focuses on care for the environment. An award ceremony was also created called the CREATE Awards, which recognizes students, faculty and staff for their work on sustainable development on campus.
