Environmental Studies

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
The Environmental Studies Department offers a 39 to 41 credit major with the introductory interdisciplinary course, ENVS 101, which builds cohesion and a sense of community for the major. Students take five additional “ENVS Core” classes: ENVS 102, Environmental Politics and Policy, ENVS 103, Human Ecology, ENVS 104, Environmental Chemistry, ENVS 200, Case Studies in Environmental Science, and ENVS 358, Environmental Ethics.
All students take five additional upper division classes distributed in the humanities and social sciences. There is also the option to take an additional lab science as an upper division elective. All senior majors complete the program with a capstone class, ENVS 499, Symposium in Environmental Studies.

Sustainable Business

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
This minor is designed primarily for business majors who want to learn more about environmental issues, but the minor would be available to anyone at Gonzaga University.

Students earning a Sustainable Business minor would be required to take courses from both the School of Business Administration and the Environmental Studies Department within the College of Arts & Sciences. The intention is to have these courses work together across disciplines to give students the necessary background in both business and environmental studies.

The Environmental Studies Minor is 20 credits. All students take ENVS 101, Introduction to Environmental Studies, ENVS 103, Human Ecology and Lab or ENVS 104 Environmental Chemistry and Lab, ENVS 200, Case Studies in Environmental Science, and ENVS 358, Environmental Ethics. Students additionally take 1 elective each in ENVS social science and ENVS humanities.

Solidarity & Social Justice

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (3rd program):
The Solidarity and Social Justice (SOSJ) minor strives to provide students with a thorough understanding of the range of ways that scholars, researchers, and students address injustices and engage in efforts to promote social justice in the contemporary world. The minor provides students with a strong foundation for understanding and researching justice issues from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and endeavors to inspire them to become "men and women for others," while also fostering the practical skills necessary for employment.
