Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Composting with Dickinson College

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Gettysburg College has struggled for many years to effectively compost the kitchen waste, pulp and ground byproduct from the College's dish room. Over the last year we have worked to better understand how our Colleagues at Dickinson College have been able to successfully operate a composting program at their campus farm. We learned a lot from these interactions. Not only did we learn that they had pretty extensive existing infrastructure for composting their dining waste. We also learned that they were searching for more product as the are planning to expand their composting operations over the next year.
We have developed a program that presently involves Facilities Services and Dining Services to collect the dishroom pulp, package the product in rubbermaid containers. Product is loaded by Facilities into a pickup truck and transport the compost to the Dickinson Farm. Approximately fifteen 10 gallon containers will be delivered weekly.

As the program develops our intentions are to get our students involved in assisting with transporting the compost. Presently we have a very active ROTC program that is coordinated with Dickinson College. This program requires our students to drive college vans to Dickinson College 2-3 days a week to attend the programs. Once the program is in full swing we anticipate being able to transport over 300 gallons of product each week.

This innovative approach has positive impacts for both Gettysburg and Dickinson College.
