Center for Public Service: Immersion Projects with a focus on Sustainabilty

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Immersion Projects are unique opportunities to travel and learn at Gettysburg College. These experiences are not for credit, occur over college breaks, include lots of preparation (learning), are student led, and are funded by participants paying their own way. Each Immersion Project, sponsored by the Center for Public Service, is focused on a particular social justice theme. There are typically 10-12 Immersion Projects each year, and at least one each year (in recent years) has a theme focused on sustainability. The latest one that was offered was in January 2020 (there have been no IPs during COVID) to Nepal on the theme of Food, Globalization and Sustainability. Being primarily an agricultural society, the majority of the population of Nepal derives food security from its land. Both globalization and climate change present challenges to the stability and sustainability of Nepal’s food system. This project focused on understanding current challenges and identifying organizations promoting community development, agricultural production and innovative practices in Nepal. This Immersion Project will be offered again for January 2023.
