A survey was conducted with all of the department chairs asking for this information. The results were then cross-referenced using data from departmental websites which included descriptions of faculty research areas.
Sustainability research was defined as research about sustainability related topics - including environmental sustainability, planning, history, policy, ecology, management, economic economics, ethics, religion and so on. In addition, topics that include a substantial environmental/sustainability aspect were also included, such as studies of globalization, colonialism, development and Native American/Indigenous studies.
