The Center for Public Service engages in a number of social justice issues in the local community, many of them directly or indirectly related to sustainability and community resilience. Migrant labor has had a substantial impact on fruit growing industry in the county and naturally raises questions about the environmental, social and economic dimensions of agriculture. Many students from a variety of disciplines have studied and researched the migrant community and reached a better understanding of the public policy work surrounding immigration and migrant farmworkers.
Additionally, students and staff at CPS have played a crucial role in the examination and development of public policy for food justice initiatives in the community. An public lecture at the college in 2008 sparked the creation of the Adams County Food Policy Council which has since significantly shaped the community's awareness and understanding of food justice. Initial successes of this advocacy work have included the collection of quantitative data on food access in the county, efforts to link up local food producers and hospital/school cafeterias, and the introduction of EBT machines at the local farmers' market to improve access to fresh, healthy, and local foods for low-income families.
