Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
Yes
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
Promoting sustainability at Georgia College is the mutual responsibility of students, staff, faculty, and leadership. To help serve sustainability education, we have created a Sustainability Faculty Fellows program. The instructors and professors who have joined this group have been trained in sustainability and are committed to incorporating sustainability outcomes into their classes and programs, including the Sustainability Certificate. The fellows meet regularly to discuss issues, develop new courses and instruction, and improve their background in sustainability.
We hope this pilot program develops into a sustainability fellows program with additional incentives for faculty participation.
Our teaching circle began with several discussions about the concepts of sustainability and the most effective ways to address sustainability within an educational institution. We updated the excellent work done by the 2009-10 Sustainability Teaching Circle to catalog existing courses on Georgia College campus. We created an inventory of over 50 professors who teach and research on topics related to sustainability. Our examination included conversations about engaged learning, including concepts such as the National Wildlife Federation's Student Sustainability Educators program. To help move our work forward, we produced three posters for display at various campus functions.
